About the Series |
|
Presented by the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), the Engaging STEM Learners Workshop Series is designed to support those teaching STEM related courses at TMU. The series creates space to explore evidence-based strategies, share practical approaches to common challenges in STEM teaching, and connect with colleagues across departments.
Each session highlights STEM-specific insights into course design, assessment, and classroom practices, while fostering a teaching community committed to supporting student engagement and success.
All workshops will be presented as hybrid, with participants able to attend online or in-person at KHW 057 (Active Learning Classroom). Light refreshments will be provided for those attending in-person. Read about and RSVP for each of the three sessions coming up over the next two months. |

Reimagining Labs and Studios In STEM |
Wednesday, October 29, 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. |
|
Laboratories and studios are often central to STEM learning, yet their full potential as teaching and learning environments may not always be realized. This workshop invites faculty to reflect on the goals of labs and studios and consider ways in which these spaces can equitably equip learners with core disciplinary skills, while also fostering collaboration and critical thinking.
Together, we will explore strategies that seek to address questions such as:
-
What unique learning opportunities can our lab and studio spaces offer learners?
-
How can instructors foster inclusion and collaboration in these spaces?
-
And what forms of assessment best capture the learning that takes place in labs and studios?
Attendees will leave with concrete strategies for enhancing their lab and studio pedagogy. |

Best Practices and Emerging Challenges in STEM Teaching |
Wednesday, November 26, 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. |
|
This session brings together TMU faculty to share best practices, address common challenges, and strengthen community across STEM disciplines. Together, we will explore how evidence-based pedagogical and assessment strategies can be employed in STEM classrooms in ways that advance equity and enhance student learning.
The discussion will also consider emerging challenges—including GenAI, growing class sizes, and the need to prepare students for interdisciplinary, socially responsive problem-solving—and how we might adapt our teaching in response. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical strategies to enrich their teaching and a stronger cross-disciplinary network for collaboration and support. |
