Unlocking Learning: Escape Rooms in the Classroom (and Beyond) with Arica Oliver and Dr. Mark Julien |
|
|
What happens when you turn a lecture hall into an escape room? In
this episode of Podagogies, Brock University’s Arica Oliver and Mark Julien discuss how they've gamified human resources education. From puzzle-based test prep to navigating campus offices, their escape room activity blends competition, collaboration, and critical engagement with equity and human rights. The conversation explores how playful design can deepen learning, foster community, and make “dry” content memorable—while still addressing serious issues in HR and management.

Laboratories and studios are often central to STEM learning, yet their full potential as teaching and learning environments may not always be realized. This workshop invites faculty to reflect on the goals of labs and studios and consider
ways in which these spaces can equitably equip learners with core disciplinary skills, while also fostering collaboration and critical thinking. Together, we will explore strategies that seek to address questions such as: What unique learning opportunities can our lab and studio spaces offer learners? How can instructors foster inclusion and collaboration in these spaces? And what forms of assessment best capture the learning that takes place in labs and studios? Attendees will leave with concrete strategies for enhancing their lab and studio pedagogy.

specifications grading and how to integrate these assignments into your course. Please note that this workshop is primarily intended for members of the Faculty of Arts. Some familiarity with alternative grading principles is helpful, but experience using those principles in your classes is not required.
