|
Last Tuesday, May 20 the Centre for Excellence in Learning & Teaching hosted the 2025 Learning & Teaching Conference. From all of us at the CELT, thank you to all
conference attendees and presenters for sharing your time, energy and expertise so generously at the 2025 Learning and Teaching conference.
This year the LTC welcomed over 440 participants in person and online, with over 80 presenters and 3 special sessions covering topics including, Black-Focused Pedagogy. Learning & Teaching Scholarship, and Free Access to Education. We thank our incredible presenters for bringing to life this year’s theme of Transforming Futures Through Learning and Teaching Excellence. This impactful and meaningful work is at the heart of our event and the learning and teaching excellence practiced across the TMU community.
We also extend all of our gratitude to the support staff from across the CELT and OVPA for their immeasurable dedication and efforts. Without them, this event would not be possible!
If you’re interested in learning more about particular topics or presenters, watch out for more updates in the coming weeks as we share presentation slideshows and a special conference-themed episode of Podogagies featuring contributions from presenters and guests.

Listen to Podagogies Episode 33
Teaching Sustainable Fashion through Land-based Learning with Rachel MacHenry |
|
|
In this episode of Podagogies, we speak with Dr. Rachel MacHenry, Assistant Professor of Fashion at TMU, about her innovative course that brings first-year students to the rooftop urban farm to grow, harvest, and dye with natural plants. Blending sustainability, decolonization, and hands-on learning, the course invites students to reimagine fashion as a practice rooted in land-based knowledge and ecological reciprocity. From indigo to madder root, and now flax for linen, McHenry shares how the rooftop garden is transforming design education—and what it means to grow textiles and student engagement side by side.

Facilitated by:
Paulette Vincent-Ruz (she/ella), Assistant Professor in Chemistry Education Research at New Mexico State University
In this talk, I will share how I build theoretical frameworks that center systemic power dynamics and apply QuantCrit as a methodological approach to address educational inequity in Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER). If the goal is to challenge and dismantle inequitable structures in education, research must move beyond post-positivist paradigms and engage with frameworks explicitly aligned with equity, justice, and liberation.
